Bobby Deol birthday special: When the actor got irritated after being called ‘behenji’ over the phone

On Bobby Deol’s birthday, an old throwback anecdote from the actor has resurfaced online and is drawing attention for all the right reasons. Bobby once revealed how he would get irritated when strangers mistook him for a woman during phone calls and addressed him as “behenji.” The moment comes from an older interview in which he spoke candidly about his childhood voice, the confusion it caused, and how he even turned it into a playful prank.

“Meri awaaz bahot patli thi…”: Bobby Deol recalls a funny childhood memory

In an old interview with Bollywood Bubble, Bobby shared how his voice was extremely thin when he was younger, often leading to amusing misunderstandings. Talking about whether he ever made prank or blank calls, he said, “When I was a kid, meri awaaz bahot patli thi (my voice was rather thin and reedy). Obviously, as you grow older and mature, your voice changes. But at that time, whenever I picked up the phone at home, people presumed I was a girl. They’d ask, ‘Behenji, Dharamji hain ghar par?’ and I used to get irritated initially. In hotels, you know, you can dial room numbers and just talk. I used to call people randomly, or if someone called, I’d speak as if I were a lady, just to have some fun… bachpan ke din thhe woh (those were my childhood days).”The story felt honest, relatable, and offered a glimpse of Bobby’s lighter side long before his on-screen reinvention.

From romantic hero to surprise comeback performer

Bobby Deol made his debut with ‘Barsaat’ in 1995 and spent much of his early career in romantic and comedy roles. Despite coming from a celebrated film family, he constantly faced comparisons with his father Dharmendra and elder brother Sunny Deol—a shadow that followed him for years. After his career slowed down post-2013, Bobby went through a difficult phase. However, he made a strong comeback in 2020 with renewed confidence, opting for intense, author-backed roles that helped redefine his image.

Owning his journey and moving forward

In another old interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bobby opened up about how challenging the slump was for him. He said, “When you pity yourself, you start cursing the world around you. That’s what happened with me for two-three years. I started pitying myself and thought no one wanted to work with me, so I relied on alcohol. I started numbing myself, and then one day I realised where I was wrong when I saw it in my kids’ eyes—that our father stays home all day long.He added, “I saw the same emotion in my mother’s and wife’s eyes too. Something in me changed, and I realised that if I want to move forward, I can’t wait for someone else to do it. I’ll have to walk myself. That’s when I started working on myself, and I’ve been extremely busy over the last two-three years.”

On the work front

Bobby Deol was last seen in Aryan Khan’s directorial ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’. He is now gearing up for several upcoming projects, including ‘Alpha’, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari Wagh. He will also return with the cult-hit web series ‘Aashram’.
