Kannada actress Ranya Rao came into the spotlight last year because of a gold smuggling case. People were shocked when it came out that her father is a top police officer in Karnataka. Ranya was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence at Bengaluru airport after she arrived from Dubai with 14.8 kilograms of gold. She was taken straight into custody that night.Ranya is known for the Kannada film Manikya, and a few other South Indian films. After her arrest, she was sent to Bengaluru Central Jail. The DRI later imposed a fine of Rs 102 crore on her. The Enforcement Directorate also filed a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. She was given a one-year jail sentence and is still in prison. Now, a fresh controversy has broken out. Reports from News 18 say that a video has gone viral on social media.
Viral video brings father into trouble
The video allegedly shows Ramachandra Rao, a DGP-rank IPS officer, in intimate moments with women inside his official office. He was seen hugging and kissing women while in uniform during office hours. The women were seen visiting his chamber on different days and wearing different clothes.The video has raised serious questions. People are talking about discipline and behavior inside a government office. Even though there are no claims of force, many feel that such acts inside an office are wrong and unacceptable.
Government action and officer’s response
The issue reached Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. As reported by PTI he took a briefing and was reportedly upset after seeing the video. He ordered an inquiry and said, “We will investigate this matter and take disciplinary action. No one is above the law.” After this, Ramachandra Rao was suspended from service.The IPS officer denied all allegations. He said, “I am shocked, and the videos are fabricated. I will meet an advocate and file a case against those spreading false news.” He also tried to meet the Home Minister but returned without meeting him.
How the smuggling case unfolded
Coming to the smuggling case, when Ranya was caught, officers found that she was wearing gold jewellery on her body. She had also hidden gold bars inside her clothes. During questioning, she admitted that she was carrying 17 gold bars. From her house, officials recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 2 crore and more than Rs 2.5 crore in cash.Investigators said Ranya had travelled to Dubai 30 times in one year. In the 15 days before her arrest, she had gone there four times. Officials believe she brought gold into India many times. Assets worth Rs 34 crore were seized, including two houses in Bengaluru, an industrial plot, and agricultural land.It also came out that Ramachandra Rao, the DGP-rank officer, is her stepfather. As per officials, Ranya used to tell airport police that she was an IPS officer’s daughter and asked them to drop her home.
