Protest Erupts in Chennai Against Arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro | Chennai News
CHENNAI: Condemning the apprehension of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro following US military action, Communist Party workers staged a protest near the US Consulate in Teynampet on Monday. Police arrested around 150 protesters, including 25 women, and detained them at a community hall in Royapettah.The agitators, led by party state functionary G Ramakrishnan, former Maduravoyal MLA Bheema Rao, and Central Chennai district President Selvam, assembled on Peters Road in Royapettah around 11 am. As the protesters attempted to march towards the consulate, police deployed personnel in large numbers and erected barricades on Peters Road, restricting vehicular movement and preventing the march from proceeding.Despite the restrictions, the protesters attempted to breach the security cordon and move towards the consulate. Police intervened and detained the demonstrators, later transporting them in two buses to a nearby community hall for detention.
