1 arrested for murder of 73-yr-old woman in Mizoram | Guwahati News

Aizawl: A 41-year-old man, allegedly a drug addict, has been arrested for the murder of 73-year-old K Vanlalngaii, who was found dead in her rented home in south Mizoram’s Lunglei town at 9.10pm on Dec 31. Lunglei district superintendent of police (SP) J Lalmuankima said on Friday the case was cracked within 24 hours.Lalmuankima told TOI over the phone that although the suspect, Johny Rosangliana, a resident of Bazar Veng neighbourhood in Lunglei town, was the prime suspect in the murder case. Rosangliana, arrested at around 9pm on Thursday night, has confessed to the crime during interrogation.The SP said the perpetrator left almost no crucial evidence at the scene, even for forensic experts, except indications that the house had been broken into — most likely to steal money. Vanlalngaii received at least Rs 20,000 as a Christmas gift from donors. The cause of death was determined to be either a blow with a blunt weapon or a fall during a struggle.Due to the limited evidence, a special investigation team (SIT) was constituted to probe the homicide. “The hard work of the SIT resulted in a breakthrough within 24 hours,” Lalmuankima said.Police officials who conducted the inquest reported injuries on Vanlalngaii’s neck and the left side of her head.Vanlalngaii had been living alone in an Anganwadi building rent-free, as she was economically disadvantaged. Following the post-mortem examination, her body was taken to her son’s residence at Luangmual and buried on Thursday afternoon.Investigators suspect she was killed during a robbery attempt. A case has been registered at Lunglei police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).The SP said the suspect was produced before a district court on Friday, which remanded him to judicial custody and sent him to Lunglei district jail. Further investigation is underway to establish the motive and gather additional evidence.
