Set in a small South Dakota town, ‘Americana’ follows the turmoil that erupts after a sacred Lakota ghost shirt, a priceless Native American artefact, is stolen. When the relic enters the black market, it pulls together a group of criminals, drifters and outsiders, all chasing different outcomes, eventually leading to a violent confrontation.The story unfolds across five chapters titled ‘The Old New West’, ‘The Ballad of Lefty and Penny Jo’, ‘The Ghost Shirt’, ‘Homecoming’ and ‘Here’s Mr. Mother*****r’. Using a non-linear structure, the film shifts between timelines and perspectives, slowly revealing how each character is connected to the artefact.The film follows the storyline of Penny Jo who is a waitress that is trying to make it big in the country music scene, but also suffers from stuttering; and Lefty, a war veteran who is soft spoken and looking for his place in life. For Mandy, the ghost shirt may help her escape her abusive relationship with Dillon; however, her child, Cal, is convinced that he is actually a reincarnated version of Sitting Bull. Their paths cross through Ghost Eye, a Native American activist that plans to recover the artefact for its sacred and traditional value.
