Rajinikanth, who turned 75, has completed 50 years in cinema, marking a stellar journey across multiple languages. In 1995, he made his only Bengali film appearance in Bhagya Debata alongside Mithun Chakraborty, at his friend’s request. The superstar’s latest release, Coolie (2025), marks his 171st lead role under Lokesh Kanagaraj’s direction.

Rajinikanth, who recently turned 75, has completed 50 glorious years in cinema, leaving a permanent mark across the Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam industries. Among his many achievements lies a little-known fact: his brief yet notable appearance in the 1995 Bengali action drama ‘Bhagya Debata.’ The cameo remains his only foray into Bengali cinema in a remarkable career spanning over five decades.

The film and its storyline

The 1995 film ‘Bhagya Debata,’ directed by renowned choreographer Raghuram, cast Mithun Chakraborty as Jagadish Mondal, a fighter for the underprivileged. Adding a special touch to the film, Rajinikanth appeared briefly in the title song, showcasing his presence in a memorable cameo.

Friendship behind the cameo

As per NDTV’s report, Rajinikanth’s cameo in the film came about after Mithun personally requested him. The song featuring his appearance quickly became a hit among audiences. ‘Bhagya Debata’ also boasted an impressive lineup of Bengali stars, including Soumitra Chattopadhyay and Rituparna Sengupta. Interestingly, Rajinikanth and Mithun had earlier teamed up in the 1989 Hindi film ‘Bhrashtachar,’ marking their first on-screen collaboration.

Rajinikanth’s latest release: ‘Coolie’

In 2025, Rajinikanth returned to the big screen with ‘Coolie,’ helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film, which marks the superstar’s 171st lead role, showcases him as Deva. Their first collaboration, ‘Coolie,’ unfolds in the rough pathway of Visakhapatnam’s docks, where Deva’s fight for justice begins after the mysterious death of his closest friend. The action drama features Nagarjuna, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, and Shruti Haasan in prominent roles.

Half a century of stardom

Since making his debut in 1975 with K. Balachander’s ‘Apoorva Raagangal,’ Rajinikanth has grown into an enduring legend of Tamil cinema. Over the span of 50 years, he has headlined numerous blockbuster hits, including ‘Sivaji: The Boss,’ ‘Enthiran’ (Robot), ‘2.0,’ ‘Thalapathy,’ and ‘Jailer.’
