Actor Jang Dong-gun visited the funeral home at Seoul Asan Hospital on November 26, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of Lee Soon-jae, Korea’s oldest active actor who passed away the previous day at age 91. “I had planned to see his last performance before his passing, but the show was canceled that day due to his health issues. I heard recently that his health had deteriorated, which was heartbreaking,” Jang revealed. According to Yonhap News, the funeral home continued to see an endless stream of colleagues and junior actors paying their respects on the second day.
Memories of passion and dedication
Jang Dong-gun, who worked with Lee on the film ‘Good Morning President’, recalled the veteran’s unmatched passion. “He was far more enthusiastic on set than other actors, which made me reflect on myself. I learned so much filming alongside him. I hope he rests peacefully in a better place,” he said emotionally.Actor Kim Yong-gun, who traveled with Lee on the variety show ‘Grandpas Over Flowers’ and co-starred in the drama ‘Nonsense’, shared poignant memories. “I didn’t know ‘Nonsense’ would be his last work. It aired as a special yesterday, bringing back so many thoughts. Seven months of filming flashed before my eyes like a film reel. Please rest in peace,” he expressed tearfully.
Industry legends remember a giant
Actor Yang Taek-jo reminisced about his early days as an assistant director on the film ‘Miracle’, where Lee appeared as a witness. “Back then, he told me, ‘When you become a great director, I’ll benefit from knowing you.’ But I became an actor instead, so he left without receiving that benefit. I hope he enjoys eternal life in heaven,” Yang said with regret.Actress Seo Hyo-rim, daughter-in-law of the late Kim Soo-mi, recalled her debut drama where she worked with Lee. “He had a deep connection with my mother-in-law. I hope they meet happily in heaven,” she said, tears welling up.Comedians Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Se-ho also paid their respects, with Jo remarking, “I remember his kind smile whenever we met. I’m so grateful for his dedication.
