Zubeen Garg's death is 'plain and simple' murder: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma tells assembly

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has described the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg as “plain and simple murder”, telling the state Assembly on Tuesday that “one person killed him and others helped him”. Speaking on the first day of the winter session, Sarma intervened as the opposition moved an adjournment motion to discuss the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death in Singapore on 19 September. The motion, brought separately by leader of the opposition Debabrata Saikia and independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, was admitted after the chief minister asked the speaker to allow the discussion.Sarma said the government was “equally seized of the matter” and requested that the motion be taken up, while adding that the Treasury benches would not participate in the debate and would only present the government’s formal response. He also urged the House to permit the introduction of important bills and supplementary grants listed on the day’s agenda. Speaker Biswajit Daimary allowed the adjournment motion, noting that the scheduled bills would be tabled after the discussion. He cautioned members to avoid remarks that could interfere with the ongoing investigation. Garg, 52, died while swimming in the sea in Singapore. A Special Investigation Team of Assam Police is examining the circumstances of his death. Separately, a one-man commission led by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court has extended the deadline for recording statements and submitting evidence to 12 December. The commission began its work on 3 November, and individuals with relevant information have been asked to submit duly notarised affidavits between 10:30 and 16:00 hours on working days. The singer’s 53rd birthday last month was marked across Assam with emotional tributes, as the investigation continues.
