A young couple’s 130-year-old home turns into an online talking point; here’s why |
Buying an old house often comes with its own share of quirks, but for one millennial couple, the experience has unfolded in a way neither of them saw coming. What started as a routine move into a Victorian-era property soon transformed into a fascinating journey into the home’s past, all triggered by a surprising letter that arrived shortly after they settled in. Their posts have since gained significant traction online, with viewers following each discovery as it unfolds.A letter addressed simply to ‘purchaser’According to a report by the New York Post, Courtney explained in her TikTok video that the envelope, sent from Canada, carried only one word on the front: “purchaser.” Inside was a message from someone claiming close ties to the home’s earlier era. As she read in the clip, it stated: “Let me introduce myself. I am the last surviving member of the Madison family who once owned the house, and I grew up in it,” adding, “I would like to … tell you about the secret rooms and a few things you may not have been told when you bought the house.”While the couple has not shared details about the home’s location or the Madison family, the letter’s contents were enough to guide their next steps.A hidden cabinet above the fireplaceAccording to the New York Post, following the clues, their first major find was a concealed liquor cabinet in the front parlour. Behind a sliding mirrored panel above the fireplace, they discovered a collection of dusty, unopened bottles, including rosé from 1970, cabernet sauvignon from 1989, and other old spirits such as bourbon, beer, and cream sherry.A bathroom spot leads to a crawl spaceThe letter also mentioned a hidden area located in the bathroom. According to the New York Post, when the couple checked the spot opposite the door, they found a small, cramped crawl space rather than a full room. Courtney, who called the bathroom “by far the scariest room” due to its worn-out appearance, said the crawl space felt more like an attic section than a functional room.A locked door reveals a large trunk roomDirectly across from the toilet stood a tiny locked door. Once opened, it led to a spacious trunk room, an unexpected amount of storage space tucked behind a miniature entrance. Courtney said they would eventually figure out how to use the area, but, for the moment, it remained one of the more intriguing finds inside the home.Antique objects add to the storyAccording to the New York Post, in additional posts, Courtney and Matt revealed that several antique belongings had been left behind. Among them was an old music box that played a haunting version of the wedding march when wound. Courtney’s startled reaction– “Oh, my God!” – was captured in a video that quickly gained more than a million views.Thumb image: Canva AI (for representative purposes only)
