Crisis caused by US tariff hike is expected to be resolved by Dec: TAI | Coimbatore News
COIMBATORE: Textile Association of India (TAI) expects that the crisis caused by the US tariff hike — which affected the apparel industry the most — will be resolved by December, said a TAI office-bearer.“The apparel industry is capital, power and labour intensive. The raw material price is much higher than the international cost. Almost 30% of textile export is to the US. It is not the entire sector that has got affected, but sectors like bed linen are facing the consequences,” said K Ramalingam who is the convenor of the 78th All India Textile Conference which TAI is hosting here on Nov 21 and 22. The theme of the conference is ‘Global Textiles: Unearthing Opportunities.’ Around 600 delegates from all over the country are expected to participate in it.
Ramalingam said industrial excellence awards would be presented to Durai Palanisamy, executive director, Pallavaa Group, and L S Manivannan, chairman and MD, LS Mills Ltd, Theni, during the conference.Speaking about power tariff hike in Tamil Nadu, TAI Coimbatore unit secretary Sivakumar said, “Most of the players are becoming self-dependent by shifting to renewable energy. At present, most of them use a portion of their power consumption through solar or wind. Also, with emerging hybrid models of renewable power, people are exploring ways to be more self-reliant.”
