NANDYAL: The ancient Ahobilam Paruveta Utsavam, a centuries-old temple festival in Nandyal district, is moving closer to national and international recognition. The district administration has formally recommended that the traditional celebration be included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and has also proposed its nomination to the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.In an official communication to the Ministry, District Collector and Magistrate Rajakumari Ganiya forwarded resolutions passed by 33 Gram Panchayats across Nandyal district, each expressing unanimous support for the nomination. The resolutions were adopted during Gram Sabha meetings held in the respective villages, reflecting the deep community pride and cultural attachment to the festival.The initiative was spearheaded by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Nandyal Chapter, which had earlier requested formal permission to nominate the Ahobilam Paruveta Utsavam for inclusion in the National Inventory. Responding to the appeal, the district administration swiftly processed and authenticated the Gram Panchayat resolutions before forwarding them to the Ministry of Culture for necessary action.Expressing happiness over this milestone, INTACH Nandyal Chapter Convener M.V. Sivakumar Reddy said the collective effort was a proud moment for the people of Nandyal. “As part of our efforts to secure UNESCO recognition for the Paruveta Utsavam, all 33 villages where the festival is celebrated have unanimously passed resolutions supporting the nomination. Acting on INTACH Nandyal Chapter’s request, the district collector herself has verified and issued the official letter today,” he said, adding that the move marks a significant step in preserving local heritage for future generations.The Ahobilam Paruveta Utsavam, dedicated to Lord Narasimha, symbolises the divine hunt undertaken by the deity. The ritual, re-enacted every year with grandeur, draws thousands of devotees and showcases Andhra Pradesh’s living traditions of faith, folklore, and craftsmanship.Officials said that inclusion of the festival in the National and UNESCO heritage lists would bring global recognition to Andhra Pradesh’s cultural richness and boost heritage-based tourism in Nandyal district. If approved, the Paruveta Utsavam will join the ranks of other Indian traditions such as Kumbh Mela and Ramlila, already recognised for their enduring social and spiritual significance.
