Odisha government empowers tehsildars to streamline land record updates | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday approved amendments to the Odisha Survey and Settlement Rules giving more powers to tehsildars. The govt said the amendments will address issues faced by land buyers and sellers at the tehsil level.Under current provisions, the record of rights of land purchased before the settlement operation is updated in the buyer’s name by the settlement officer. However, if for any reason the land record is not updated in the buyer’s name during the process, the buyer had to appeal to the Board of Revenue or another authorised revision court.Due to excessive workload, these appeals often remain unresolved for years. However, with the CM’s approved rule amendment, tehsildars are now empowered to update such land records in the buyer’s name, a govt statement said. This will allow buyers concerned to apply to the relevant tehsildar to have the land record of legally purchased land updated in their name before the settlement operation. They will no longer need to appeal to the board or any other authorised court. While the Orissa Survey and Settlement Act, 1958, provides the legal framework for all survey and settlement activities in the state, the Orissa Survey and Settlement Rules, 1962, details procedures for carrying out the provisions of the Act.
