'Shogun' Season 2: Everything You Need to Know About the Upcoming Episodes and Finale

With ‘Shogun Season 1’ making waves in the entertainment industry, anticipation is at an all-time high for its next chapter. The historical drama has already secured its place as a must-watch series. Following its remarkable performance at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, the show’s creators, Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, have offered a significant update regarding ‘Shogun Season 2.’
During the awards ceremony, Justin Marks confirmed that the writing phase for Season 2 is now finished, with all 10 episodes including the much-anticipated finale—fully developed. Speaking to Deadline on February 7, Marks shared insights into the current status of production, emphasizing the excitement surrounding the next installment.
“We’ve just wrapped up work in the writers’ room,” Marks revealed. “Every episode, including the finale, is done. Now, we’re figuring out the best way to bring it to life on screen and we couldn’t be more thrilled about our plan moving forward.”
Marks hinted that ‘Shogun Season 2’ will kick off with unexpected twists, ensuring that viewers remain captivated right from the first episode.
“If there’s one thing I can say, it’s that fans should brace themselves for surprises as early as the opening of part 2,” he teased.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Marks suggested that the narrative will take unexpected turns, particularly for the series’ lead, Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga. Sanada, who won Best Actor in a Drama Series at the Critics Choice Awards, shared his hopes for his character’s journey.
“In Season 1, Toranaga had yet to become a shōgun,” Sanada noted. “I’d love to see him rise to power and fulfill that destiny in the upcoming season.”
The overwhelming success of ‘Shogun’ at the “Critics Choice Awards” further cements its place as a standout historical drama. The series claimed victories in multiple categories, including:
Best Drama Series
Best Actor in a Drama Series – Hiroyuki Sanada
Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Moeka Hoshi
Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Tadanobu Asano
These accolades add to its record-breaking achievements at the Emmy Awards, where it secured 18 wins across both the Primetime Emmy Awards and Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2024.
Given the show’s overwhelming popularity, FX has decided to extend ‘Shogun’ beyond its initial miniseries format. In May 2024, the network officially greenlit both Shōgun Season 2 and Season 3, expanding the scope of this historical epic.
‘Shogun’ season 2 is expected to premiere in 2026 at the earliest. Hiroyuki Sanada, in an interview with Collider, stated that a 2025 release is highly unlikely. ‘Shogun’ gun is inspired by historical events, particularly the power struggles following the death of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which eventually led to the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate. While the story incorporates fictional elements, its foundation is rooted in Japan’s rich history.
